The ART OF DESTASH

Pictured are 3  8 by 10 inches watercolor paper hand painted shabby chic mats
for use with 5 by 7 inches art or photography
Available in my etsy store.
These are $10 for 3 plus S&H

I have got a lot of these Shabby Chic hand painted watercolor paper mats that I made during my years at the Antiques Shop. I  began painting these because I never could quite find colors I wanted to match my paintings. So when someone gave me old watercolor paper from an abandoned house I made these mats.

They are all hand painted and embellished with acrylic paints. They were hand cut and not precise like a store bought mat.

One woman who saw my paintings in these said. " These are absolutely wonderful with these old barns. And country farm animal paintings fit perfectly. I love that they are not quite perfect, but like you would see in nature."
Here is an example of one of these hand painted
mats used with a painting and framed. This item, the
framed and matted painting is also available on etsy.

Not all of them are bright colors. Most of them are darker colors  of brown, green or slate blue with embellishments that make them look like faux wood, marble or  just about any wild thing I could think of that would enhance my small formate individual art.

I will be adding more to the collection in my main etsy shop in the coming days before Thanksgiving.

The Perfect Life: 61F and In the Garden at 8 Am

I think that if I had a perfect life I would garden for a hour or so every morning 5 days a week 9 months out of the year.  In the hot months I would be in the pool exercising right after.  In the cool days it would be riding. Then I would make art. In the evening I would enjoy my yard and share it with family and friends at least once a week. Maybe play a game or just talk. Perhaps grill and/ or make homemade ice cream. One day a week I would travel to yard sales, flea markets, antiques malls to practice and enhance my picking skills. Or perhaps go out just to photograph to keep my work fresh with new ideas.

Its not a perfect life.. yet.  Family is too far away and don’t visit very often. Most of my friends are busy with the struggles of life. I haven’t been able to get out into the yard since sometime at the beginning of March when I was told I had Peripheral Vascular Disease. ( I'm leaving out the scary parts)Going out to photograph for any length of time is very limited due to the cost of gas. I used to go out at least twice a month.  It was the same with traversing the countryside to enhance my picking skills.

I did get out in the yard this morning. It was not very long and not very much. I watered plants.  I cut down a very rebellious polk plant growing in the flower bed in front of my deck.   I reclaimed my aloe plant, only to discover that in addition to weeds there was also a colony of little black ants residing in the pot. That will be dealt with at another time. I still feel like the little pests are crawling all over me.
My main goal, however, was the Rosemary plant. I was able to have at it the first year I moved in. There were two there. I actually cut it back so far that one of them died. Had I not done it, the plants would have grown so large they would have taken my entire parking place and cut off the water faucet from the rest of the world. As it is, the remaining plant has simply taken over the slate walkway. It was indeed inching its way toward the parking space.

Worse there was a tree growing out of the middle of the plant that does nothing but produce leaves . I haven’t any idea where on earth that one came from. And because it was so cool this morning I managed to make a start on it.  Thanking God for that opportunity.  I might be able to do small amounts all week as the temperature will be going down to the mid to low 60s evey night this week. So early mornings are going to be awesome.

I admit I was tired when I came in and my legs throbbed a bit. But oh how my muscles loved it. And my breathing was awesome. It’s like I was charged with deep breathing and O2. Maybe I need to consider moving some place that has temps in the 60s year around. Is there a place like that? I haven’t a clue.

I would miss Virginia too much. There is so much variety, color, and so many trees.  I love it here. I can stand on my deck and look through the trees to the west on any day and see the Blue Ridge Mountains.
There are horses everywhere around here and rolling green pastures.  I love it. It’s not completely perfect in circumstances, well that’s just life. Not a bad one at that.

My 5 minutes of Anger. And a whole lot of releif!

Every once in a while something happens in my life I need to talk about and share.
This is one of those days!

After 46 years of not me not knowing,  my doctor finally told me what is wrong with my legs.  I have PVD. Well, Friends, I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry.

Get this I’ve had this crushing pain, sometimes sharp debilitating pain since I was about 8 or 9 years old. The first doctor my parents took me too told them that I would grow out of it. That it was just growing pains.

In my early teens I lost weight, like many do, I did it through running. I ran until it hurt and the pain was so bad I couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t sustain the exercise; I couldn’t stay on the 400 calorie a day diet I needed to keep the weight off if I didn’t exercise.  Over the years in spite of the pain I’ve managed to do everything I’ve wanted, at least long enough to get experience. And always the pain was there. I never knew a time without it. I had to give up riding because of it.  I was harassed and verbally abused through most of my life when pain stopped me from doing anything. Everyone said I was just making excuses or that I was lazy and obstructive.

In the 1980s they tried to tell me that I was depressed and had fibromyalgia. They sent me to a focus group. Talk about depressing. I had nothing in common with any one there and  our symptoms weren’t even the same.  I knew I didn’t have it. But try to convince doctors of that! I was undaunted.
So I learned not to complain and not to show how much it hurt.  In the 1990s I did race course photography and prayed that the days would be cool or freezing as it was easier to walk when it was. When I could afford it I would take 8 weeks of intense water physical therapy at the local sports medicine place. ( The Washington Football team use to send injured players there as did the regional TB track.) The strength helped my circulation and  cut down on the inflammation so I could walk the distances required for a course photographer at a hunt meet or steeplechase meet.  However there were days that the pain was so bad that I couldn’t manage it. I had to come home lay down put my feet up and ice my legs on those debilitating days.

It took a heavy toll on me, both physically and emotionally.

I’ve never been able to be dependable because I’ve never been able to know when I would have a good or bad day. Holding down a full time job was nearly impossible.  You can’t  work and stand on demand if you have pain like this. I did what I could.  Yet still I miss out on so much. People in general are not sympathetic to someone they think is just fat and lazy, even doctors who should know better.

I’ve been self employed for years , for better or for worse, because of  this pain. And I have been horridly stereotyped.  Right now I’m relieved and angry and sad and happy all at the same time. Finally someone told me what was wrong with me. I have had the symptoms of Peripheral Vascular Disease literally for 46 years at least.  And yes it’s as scary as it sounds.

When we were growing up in Tidewater my dad, a pastor, would be dealing with the deaths of many folks and helping the families through it. A lot of people had a form of it caused by either diabetes or atherosclerosis. Thank God, I don’t have either of these ( people seem to try to assign me both of them all the time grrr)

So what was mine caused by? Two things are the most probable causes, second hand smoke from the time I lived with my mom’s parents as a small child and genetics. The genetics came from my dad’s side of the family. They had lots of inherited propensity for enlarged inflamed veins and phlebitis.

Unfortunately, not knowing what I had I probably added to the condition for those few brief years that I smoked in college and later as an adult.

What does the Bible Say? “My people perish for lack of knowledge (wisdom).” I had all these doctors over the years that could have told me what it was, but not one ever did, well, until today.

So I’ve had my 5 minutes of anger today and shed a few tears over the needless additional pain I have suffered.  These emotions were not so much aimed at the health care professionals that simply never told me or missed the diagnosis entirely. My anger was over the years and decades of physiological abuse and guilt I have suffered in silence, because of the pain I had to hide. I admit it, I was devastated when I had to give up my horses years ago. But anyone who knew me then will tell you there were days I could barely walk.

I missed out on social events and business opportunities too numerous to count due to this condition. And dating… how could you reasonably expect to date someone when you had no control over when  or how bad it was going to be.. and keep it hidden.  I wasn’t about to tell some likely candidate I had chronic pain, because, as I was told so often, “no one wants to be with someone who is dependent and ill all the time. “

Yet, had I known and known how it could be treated, I would still have horses. And when people needed to know I could have told them I have PVD, I need reasonable accommodation. I wouldn’t have felt a bit bad about it or humiliated.

Well the joke is on the powers that be who thought they were going to keep me down over this one. Because “evil bubba” I can still paint from bed. Na Na.  And… I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

My Advice to all my friends Please, Please, Please! If your  children or grandchildren are living in the house with you, stop smoking now. If you are way past being able to stop, then smoke outside and never in front  of any child under the age of 12. And especially around any children under 8 in a closed in space.

If your children are complaining about being tired and having leg pain, take it seriously. A child that is in pain isn’t going to exercise and that leads to all sorts of health issues. Juvenal on set PVD can cause obesity as well as being caused by obesity. I’m not kidding. Don’t let any doctor tell you the pain will just go away as they grow up. There are ways you can find out if the vascular system is inflamed and compromised before it starts affecting the heart and lungs. You have options!

Pond and Barn Featured In Etsy Treasuries by Etsy Members

My Fall White Barn and Pond really shine in  two treasuries on Etsy by Art Walk Etsy Team Members. I'm very grateful that they found it beautiful. The painting is  based on a little farm I have frequently passed over the years when traveling to visit my family in The north Shenandoah Valley.

The beautiful horse barns at Ashby farm  located between Markam and Deleplane in Fauquier County, Virginia have always fascinated me. They are tucked in next to a small mountain with traditional working horse barns that are easily seen from  interstate 55.
Asby Farm today as a Winery
I suppose in my mind I have reveled at the beauty of this farm ad thought to myself what a beautiful place to have horses and grow food. The house is more like those traditional houses that started out as a log cabin but as time when on substantial add-ons let to a more elegant sprawling home. Not a plantation house but something more worthy of a successful working farm with flowering fruit trees that bordered its drive to the main house. They are so beautiful in spring white the rest of the property is spattered with dog wood, redbud and variations of  lime and yellow-greens of the newly budded trees and undergrowth.  Gosh I sound like a real-estate sales person.   But alas its only the esthetic beauty of the place that drives my fascination to photograph it and paint it in one of my “photography drive by shootings”.

What exactly is a Photographic drive by shooting? Well it involves a camera, a car, vigilance and a certain amount of discretion, because you don’t want to invade privacy.  The pint of a photographic drive by shooting is to capture a vignette that can later be used in a painting especially when you really don’t know the people or even how to contact them, yet that beautiful section of dramatic and peaceful scenery is really an important part of your life.  A place like this becomes a part of your life because everyday you travel by it for years at a time either as  a commuter or on your frequent travel home trips when you work in one locations but have family some miles away in another location.

You sorrow when its seems less prosperous.  You revel in renovations and successes and imagine what the exterior only hints at. And even though you know you probably won’t eventually have some intimate knowledge of what is inside, the possibility always exists that you will.

This particular farm has been a part of my life for over 30 years. I have seen it through its active days as a breeding and training horse farm,  its days of dereliction as the economy turned against large working farms, its subsequent listing and sale and its current make over as a fast growing stop on the Virginia Vineyard trail. This infant winery is Ashby House Farm Vineyard?? Ok it has Ashby in its name  some where.. because, well, the Civil War Hero  Col. John Ashby really got around. And I think this might have either been  a “where he slept “ sort of thing or he and his family actually owned it at some point.

Truth is its historic mystic is not nearly as important to me as my own experience day dreaming about its aesthetic potentials. =0)

The Orchard by LindaLMartin Begins a Tour of Virginia Churches to Raise Awareness of Poverty and to Raise Money to feed the Homeless

The Orchard

Donated to Teens Opposing Poverty by Artist Linda L Martin

The Orchard is a unique modern day interpretation of the story of Jesus and the Children in Luke 18:16 "But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God." The painting is set is an apple orchard, very similar to those found in the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, which is famous for its fruit orchards.

Facts about the Painting:

*The painting is painted on canvas using acrylic polymer paints.

*The painting is approximately 24 by 36 inches.

*The painting took approximately 560 hours to paint over an 18 month period of time.

*The style of the painting is Folk Realism

*References for the face of Jesus are a composite of images of 5 traditional Jewish men from the area of Israel where Jesus would have lived. The artist acknowledges that no one can really know what Jesus looked like when he walked the earth, but those who have received his gift of Grace will recognize him when he returns.

*Artistic license was used on all of the individual children in the painting and none is a representation of a real person living or dead. Instead the artist wanted to share the variety of cultures and races represented in God’s creation, not as separated by ethnic boundaries, sexual segregation or diversity of experience, but as that commonality that is the American experience.

Touring the Painting:

The painting will tour churches in Virginia who support or are involved with Teens Opposing Poverty beginning in May 2011 with Culpeper United Methodist Church. The purpose of this tour is to allow people to see the painting before it is to be auctioned to raise money to feed the homeless and support the other activities for Teens Opposing Poverty. Teens Opposing Poverty also has plans to offer prints and note cards of the image.

If your church or organization would like to host the painting to raise awareness of poverty, and help Teens Opposing Poverty to accomplish their purposes contact here: email: contact@teensopposingpoverty.org or by phone 866-955-6260

Artist Spot Light: "Mixing Color and Family: Artist Kim Santini"

Mixing Color and Family: Artist Kim Santini

Balto, 8x10, from October 2010

The first time I saw the work of Kimberly Santini was the Poster for the AKC Eukanuba National Championship dog show. Her palette of colors was warm and inviting, she nailed the expression of every dog she painted and she pulls off the combination of impressionism and strong color skills that could only be achieved by some very extensive study in basic realism. She is one of the growing number of globally known artists that have taken on the Painting a day challenge. She is now in her 5th year of painting a dog a day.

“I have a BFA Degree in Fine Art and one in Art History.” She told me. Like so many of us artists, she had been programmed to believe that if there were not large blocks of time to lock yourself away in a studio that art just wasn’t going to happen. “I just felt if I couldn’t carve out the time, I couldn’t do it.”

Then non- art career opportunities and children took over and there were no longer large blocks of time in her busy schedule. As her children became older and went off to school she was left with her youngest daughter and a long afternoon when she slept. “I just really needed something to do during nap time. So I pulled out my acrylic paints and began to paint in the afternoons.”
According to Kim a relative saw the resulting painting and wanted a portrait, and then showed it to a friend. And so the business began to grow. However, Kim credits the encouragment of her husband with her success in stepping out into being a fulltime artist. " I have the best husband in the world. He really saw the potential in me." She told me that he has been her biggest encouragement and fan.

Tiny Kitten, Big Dreams (Mona Lisa),
5x7, from November 2010

“I was painting big. I painted life size or larger canvases of dogs and horses. Some took months to finish”

Her studio space became the center of activity of her home. “The computer is in the studio “ She told me, and her children are in an out all the time, doing homework, telling her about their day and even on occasion painting with her. “I realized with family and work I would never be able to carve out large blocks of time to paint”
She adjusted her time to fit the schedule her family needed. She said having her studio in the center of the home makes her accessible all the time. “When the kids were younger they were really involved in making things. I wanted to make creation part of their lives."  Kim insists there was always something happening to encourage them to create and imagine.

When she began painting a dog a day she realized that she would have to adjust her way of making art. The first thing was to paint small. “No more of those larger than life paintings” The process challenged her style and her efficiency as a painter. “I have a very strong foundation in the basics” she shared, “I spent many hours as a young person studying muscle structure of horses and dogs. I tried to capture the way the legs and feet held the weight so that even if you don’t see the entire body, the muscles will look right; like they are flexed to suggest the way they are standing."

Drip Dry, 9x12, from September 2010.

Kim says it was important for her to embrace the flexibility of her life style and her painting. “I want to let the viewer bring their experience to the painting, so it is not just an image to them. I am painting for every day Americans."

Her portrait work is long in expressions, deep in its ability to suggest correct draftsmanship, while giving the impression of capturing a moment in time. “I want the people who see my work, to receive the impression of the animal, and have it provoke memories, or trigger them to feel the love that had been.”

Looking towards Valentines Day 2011 and Thinking of the Past.

Valentine's Day

I just love Valentine’s Day! I mean chocolate and Romance right?? Well every year my dad would send us all a Valentine and buy us a little Chocolate heart. In my entire life I don’t think I ever had a boyfriend during Valentine’s Day, except for one year. And I think he forgot!

So why do I love Valentine’s Day? Well I think it’s really a wonderful time to share how much you love those close to you. Your children, your parents, brothers and sisters and even your best friends. I mean it doesn’t have to be about Romance it can be about that awesome camaraderie that comes through family ties and close friendships that make our lives special.

Sharing love doesn’t have to be about “sex” and it doesn’t have to be unrealistic romantic notions that never can be lived up to.

One of the coolest Valentine’s Day’s I ever had was actually at Laurel Race Course. I was covering two Stakes races on Valentine’s Day. I forgot it was Valentine’s Day, but I owed my photographer and wanted to buy her lunch. We were pampered! Roses and Chocolate and a set menu of Fillet Minong or some fish . (we both turned down the complimentary campaign because we had to drive back to Virginia that afternoon) We had the best seat in the house and an afternoon of racing and some sort of chocolate hazelnut torte that melted all kinds of ways in our mouths. And of course some absolutely amazing horse racing.

After lunch we sat there watching the races and she thanked me then sighed. “I cant believe I just had the best Valentine’s Meal ever and I wasn’t even with a guy.”

I just laughed. I suppose it was because I had long given up on that romantic notion that I had to have a guy and the romance and just found a great deal of contentment in enjoying the day.

So when you think about Valentine’s Day this year, focus on the companionship and appreciation of family and friends or maybe someone who has sacrificed their time and comfort so you could be where you are. As a Christian we call that Agape love. The love of a friend for a friend.

“ No greater love is this that one lays down his life for a friend.”~Jesus of Nazareth

Latest Commission: December Birthday painting..

Georgie and Mom
8 by 10
Watercolor
by Linda L Martin

I have never done a lot of art with humans as the subject.Mainly because animals have been my passion. I have done a total of two people portraits not including the required self portraits when in art school  a good 30 years ago. It requires a good photo image, a keen eye and a skilled hand to have a painting that is anywhere near the likenss of the person. And in my case it  also requires the grace of God that the person for whom the portrait is pleased with the work.

Each time I paint a painting with a living breathing person it is the same for me. I muster every bit of courage in the midst of trepidation and press into the frey of creativity to complete what I hope will be a kindly rendering of the person and  that doesnt offend anyone, especially the subject in question.

Close up of Georgie

So last eveing, with a good deal of fan fare and excitment, I  delivered the proof to the  new ower of "Georgie and Mom", wishing that I could see her face and her reaction. Seperated by the miles the delight at the painting electrified the phone lines with joy as I listened to her open the email and exclaim in ooohs and ahs how wonderful it is and how cute. This trepid path I wandered of human rendering turned into delight and joy, an opportunity to bless. It humbles me each time such a challenge presents its self and no one is disappointed.

I hope the remainder of my commissions for this Holiday Season meet with the same response. They will have to wait to be viewed until after Christmas, as they are surprizes and some of those receiving them are on FaceBook and the net. However, here I can share with you  " Georgie and Mom".

If you would be interested in a Watercolor pet portrait plase contact me at  contact@llmartin.com put "commission" in the subject line.

Oh Christmas Tree: Interesting things I find and Memories.

Tonight I was searching for gazebos to inspire me for a sketch I need for a commission. And wonder of wonders this amazing cake did appear in my google search. It sure did bring back memories.

Close up of Cake Central
Gazebo Tree.

When I was a little girl my mother had time to decorate cakes. This was before Sister #3 was born. She had this one cake she made one Christmas that was  very simple snow icing and a beautiful decorated Christmas tree made of icing and sprinkles and nonpareils. I don't remember what flavor the cake was or even eating it but I remember being there and watching her make it.

She daubed each little drop of green on the round cone that made the tree while the cake cooled. Then she layered and iced the cake. Mom made the icing using vegetable Crisco, pure vanilla and powdered sugar. And a tiny drop or two of water.

Gazebo Christmas Tree I found on
Cake Central. It takes moms little
Christmas Tree to the next level.
You can see it here:
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_725.html

The final touch was to add the decorated icing Christmas tree and then to put a nice green icing boarder around the  top and bottom edge of the cake.  This is one of my many favorite memories of Christmas. It wasn't the lights, the music, the gifts, the pageants at church, although all of that was important. It was the fact my mom and dad always did Christmas with us. It was a family thing. We learned, shared, experienced everything with love sprinkled on top. May be that is the reason I love Christmas. It about giving love.

We Celebrate the ultimate gift of love  at Christmas time; that of Christ coming to bring that love, that reconciliation, unconditional, unbounded, forgiven before we were even born Love that is the total reconnection to God. My greatest joy at Christmas is spending time with  my family and giving to them.  God's Greatest joy is spending time with us and giving us his Son. Pretty awesome I think.

So call me a pagan heretic if  you want but that Christmas tree in my past and in my life now is the past, present, and future promise of what love has done in my life. Christmas trees always point to heaven and that's how it should be. =0)
"For if I am silent, even the rocks and trees, all of nature, will cry out that Jesus Christ is Lord"
Merry Christmas!

Studio Frame Shop LLC in Warrenton, VA Sale until Dec 31st

Beautifully Framed Art and Reproductions grace the
elegant staircase and landing leading up to the main
frame and materials show room at
Studio Frame Shop LLC in Warrenton, Va
Come see my Original Paintings in the Studio Frame Shop LLC in Warrenton, Virginia

As I was growing up in small town rural Virginia I noticed an over looked trend. The old paint shops diversified as their communities grew. In addition to house paint and caulking they began to carry a wide variety of artists supplies and services including framing and display. This trend has carried over in some Historic Communities such as Warrenton Virginia.

The Studio Frame Shop LLC is one such venue that carries a wide variety of professional artists supplies and provides the community with the highest quality of framing and display services. They are located in the upper level of the Paint Shop right across Alexandria Pike from Horse Country Saddlery.

My original Fox In The Woods painting
graces the fox hunting art display
along with reproductions of the
Warrenton Hunt Hounds and a Herring.

Owning a business like this was just moving up to the next level for Sissy Holtzclaw and her partner and friend, Sherri Shamburg. The two met while working in the old Ben Franklins in Warrenton; where Sissy taught Sherri how to frame. This art and framing shop in Old Town Warrenton is more than just a typical artist’s store and frame shop; they take it to the next level with gallery framing, original work from local artists and high quality reproductions framed and ready for display.

I first heard of these two entrepreneur women when I discovered that they had been framing a lot of my miniature work that had sold locally. When they discovered that I was still local and that I had larger works they invited me to exhibit in their shop. They would provide the framing and the paintings would be offered to the public. That was in 2008 and I love the humor and professionalism of these two hard working women.

Currently 4 of my paintings are on display there. This is fox hunting and horse country so my work fits in nicely. In addition, several of the larger Mustang a Day Challenge paintings will be framed and offered for sle locally at the Studio Frame Shop sometime in February.

The Studio Frame Shop is opened 9 to 5 Monday to Saturday. Currently and until December 31th they are running a sale on select items as well as readymade frames and framed prints. If you are in the area enjoying the Christmas decorations or doing some shopping please stop by and say hello.

Yes its that time of year. Finishing up Christmas Commissions for the next 2 weeks. Dogs, Cats and Horses this year. Not to mention Im working on The Mustang A Day Challenge too.

The thing about doing Christmas Commissions is that one must usually wait until after the Holiday to post such works. Fortunately, I have one client that has agreed to let me share the portrait I just finished last week of her beautiful Andalusian horse and herself. Seriously, I dont paint many people, but I was happy to make the effort. Thankfully, it turned out quite flattering for all involved. Thank you Regina for letting me share with everyone. Here is Regina and Alejandro ( Very Beautiful Names too =0))

My painting "Spirit of the Mustang" was selected this week for the Best of Zazzle!

I just decided to begin listing my designs on Zazzle this week to promote the Mustang A Day Challenge Series that I will be doing begining in December. I'm also going to be marketing other work there too. Its so much easier than trying to design and make all these things in house and they come highly reccomended. So what a surprise when I was chosen among the millions to be represented and featured with 29 other artists in  this weeks Best of Zazzle. Its an honor. I hope this will help me make some sales to fund the entire project. Well thats the idea.

Im also busy setting up a web page for the project which should be up very soon so all can see it. What an awesome three weeks this should turn out to be with commissions for the Holidays, preparing for the Challenge and finsihing up my other work. Its always an adventure.

If you havent seen my new items on Zazzle.com please take a look: www.zazzle.com/LindaLMartinArtist*  The originial painting is now in my Wild Side Store on Etsy. and as of this writing lists for $265.00. Its value is going steadily upword.  You can see it at: www.etsy.com/shop/Stoneflur
