Honoring Mom: Mother's Day 2013

In my search for photos to use with a different project, I found one of my mom that I had forgotten about. It was taken at our last Thanksgiving together in 2011. We were having a  makeover directed by Kim, who was practicing for her MaryKay business.

Although, we suspected that mom was quite ill, she tried to keep it hidden, because she was afraid that everyone would stop her from going out and doing what she loved best. What she loved best was working with children as a teacher.  There was nothing she loved more or found more rewarding than teaching. She didn’t ever want to retire and she surely didn’t want to be old.

When my mother met a child she didn’t look at gender, race, culture, social or economic background, religion or disability. What my mom saw was the "God" given potential that every child has to succeed in life.

My mom used every creative way she could find to give every child a chance, for no matter how long she was their teacher. And if she saw that the parents were in need she found a way to help any who were willing to finish high-school and make a better life for their family.  A lot of what my mom did cost our family financially and it was a sacrifice we gladly supported on many levels. There were many things mom did without; however, for her, finding a creative solution was just as much an achievement and an adventure as anything.

She did everything she did out of a love for children and a life-time of service to the God she loved. She didn’t always succeed and sometimes people were not supportive, but one thing mom never did was, she never stopped doing what she felt God called her to.

She believed this verse from the book of Jeremiah: “ As for me and my house We will serve The Lord!”

Nikki from Life

This painting is one of the quick studies that I did. It came about because I was photographing fruit and reflections of color for a project for my art students at the time. Nikki just came over and sat down in the middle of everything. This study was from 2004.
"Kitten With Pear" (detail)
Oil on Gessoed Paper

Original is $300.00
If you would like to make an offer on this painting please email info@llmartin.com
In 2000 I moved to an apartment in a small town in the horse country of Virginia. It was a beautiful big apartment. I didn't have a lot of furniture, just a few pieces that people had given me. I was photographing my apartment one day and suddenly noticed that Nikki was very carefully  walking into each shot and posing.

When I suddenly got a clue I started taking his photo. He really liked it. And being part of the creative process, I think helped him adjust from being a cat that had the fields, pastures, hedgerows and fence-lines of rural life to living in town and not being allowed to go out side. It wasn't long until Nikki was posing for me when I painted.

Los Lonely Girls.. What I would love to do with the Ladies!

The year was 2004 and I was recovering from the loss of my dad and a long illness. I decided that I was tired of  the media portraying woman as this unrealistic toothpicks that never aged. I wanted to let woman see that they were beautiful, aged beautifully and celebrate their inner strength. So I painted 20 paintings. Oils on paper.
See the online exhibit at this link:
Los Lonely Girls

I choose Oils because traditionally it is the medium that lasts the longest in doors (next to stone sculpture). However, I choose heavy watercolor paper because of its fragile state that actually mimics the historic significance of the contributions of woman and the frailness of their daily lives.

I also made an important choice as to how to portray them. I choose to show them in intimate private moments where they were hiding away from the drama and demands of daily life. Alone with their thoughts trying to figure out this survival. I had actually wanted to do more than Hispanic, Native and White women in this portrayal,  however none of the women of  African-American decent would agree. This is important too because it also documents the self-image and lack of confidence that so many woman have. Especially women who have been fighting the fight of raising children alone, acting as sole caregiver for aging family members, as well as acting breadwinner and head of household for a number of family members who have chosen not to work or who are plagued with addictions.

There are a number of women who contributed to my own understanding of what it is like to be poor and working class in America with little opportunity to make good choices and yet they persevere. I thank them for their tolerance and patience with me and their friendship.

What I would love to do with the series is to show it and sell it to develop a mentoring program to help women find their way, to make not only good choices, but even better choices so they can find their voices, and use their talents to shine.

If you or your company is interested in sponsoring this exhibit please contact me at  info@llmartin.com for more details. Just type "Los Lonely Girls" in the subject line. The entire collection is available for sale  or it can be sold separately.

The First of the Yard Bunnies of 2013

I was out walking Jorji, my little foster dog, one evening a few night ago. I was a bit later getting home than anticipated, so I turned on the front porch light and walked him in the front. And who was out there but a very chubby wild bunny eating the greens on the front lawn. So much warm weather and everything is pretty green here even on the third week of January. In fact this little bunny was so chubby if I had not known he was wild, I would have thought he might have been someones well fed pet rabbit. It was really sort of cool though to imagine that the rabbit was dining in the porch light like someone who was dining at a restaurant courtyard in the evening. Ive always had a sort of fondness for bunnies.  One year I painted rabbit after rabbit and even though I do paint far more horses it was my rabbits that seemed to sell best that year.

Spirit: The Mustang Art by LindaLMartin, Artist

"Spirit"
Abstract Expressionsist Originial
by Linda L Martin
Acrylic on Canvas
5" by 7"
$265.00 on Etsy
My new painting is called “ Spirit”

I had never seen the Nature programs about the wild mustang Cloud. Yesterday, I found them on the Nature website and watched all three of them in reverse order. It was both inspiring and validating.

There is this posturing that goes on when stallions meet. Or when a stallion wants to court a mare. My painting depicts this in an expressionist style. Meaning, I don’t copy a photo or use a reference I paint from my feelings right on the canvas. This painting is executed in earth tones and white. A limited pallet of raw umber, raw sienna, burnt umber and white. I used a tiny bit of burnt sienna to accent the areas that needed red. This painting is now available for sale in my Etsy Wild Side Store.

It is a 5” by 7” acrylic on canvas and is signed in pencil on the back with a signature in paint on the front.

It sells for $265.00

Shirley's Books LLC : First Animation

Last night I began work on a  video advertising project for  a new online business.  Shirley's Books LLC just begain selling online on Amazon over the summer. They sell new, slightly used , very used and vintage books of every kind. As Shirley says: Books, Books, Books! The first thing I have to do for it before making the stills is to create several graphics that will give the video flavor and uniqueness as well as run through the entire video. The graphics will also be animated gifs that Shirley's Books LLC can use in their blog and website.

These first graphics are cartoons that had to be rendered from scratch by hand, scanned, colored through one of my programs then animated. Here is the first:
This process from start to finished stills and this sample gif took about 4 to 5 hours. I have to say while the process is a bit long with this type of animation, I get really excited to watch the results when its all put together. This is just another amazing part of the entire creative process I love.

If you would be interested in a simple 5 frame gif animation please contact me via etsy.

Where Have I been?

Well Well how time does fly. Ive been painting. Ive been negotiating. Ive been printing stuff.. and Ive been printing stuff... did I mention Ive been printing stuff? and yes Ive been working on finishing the up grading of the website..which I was suppose to have finished Back in February. Now its important that I finish the Upgrade before July 1, because all sorts of changes are about to happen.
I hired a wonderful assistant 6 weeks ago. She is amazing. she knows all sorts of stuff and is game for nearly anything with in reason. Its really motavational to work with some one that driven and creative. She is also about as nuts as I am, in a good way of course. I wont go into details but I will say to her credit she has an excellent sense of adventure when problem solving a delemmia. Its a very good trait! She is an absolute treasure and I am very lucky to have her.

Having said that She and I are rushing to get the new space ready before July 1. I will be opening my new dealer venue at The Country Shoppes at Culpeper as soon as we can get the instilation infrastructure in place and move the Art work in. Ive got about 3000 paintings in several locationsin storage, now I gotta sell them. My assistant is just as motivated as I am about getting the work out where it can be seen.

Our first Publicised event will be July 19th in Culpeper. She and I are looking into at least one event a month from September until Christmas. In additon to Original Art we will also be offering for sale Greeting Card Gift sets and Open Edition Fine Art Reproductions from Original Paintings . You will be able to see both in the WWW.LLMartin.COM web site Gift Shop in a few days. Watch this space to see when the updating is complete.

In addtion to all this work I am also still painting a couple of nights a week during the Lakeland Outpouring. Im very busy right now so I havent had time to list the new paintings. But one painting I made into an ACEO/ ARt Trading Card and offered it on Ebay this past week. It didnt sell but I got 78 hits. I put a breif history of the Outpouring and the meaning of the symbolism on the card. Interesting that no one emailed me. Too busy I suppse. Stil....

I also have some digital images from my studio. It will be a (pardon the pun) work in progress for quite a while. Especially since I am activly creating art while trying to organize it. To look at my desk you might think that organization is the least of my priorities. I will put up some of those pictures too ... and very soon.

hahaha.
well until next time... (waves) God give you more of Himself In Blessings, Knowledge, And Peace.

Back Story:

What a night. The entire praise band was on the floor tonight all under the Glory. I was thinking well maybe I should do a painting of Roy on the floor. I am still bummed about missing his session last saturday. The live feed wasnt working and I never did find if they recorded it.

I found out tonight that I will be sending some of the reproductions of this work to Todd and His wife. My seed. I dont have any money to donate but God gave me tallent and some small resourches so I am planting on Tuesday!(This is a holiday weekend the Post offices are closed until Tuesday next week.)

So tonight they brought back the guy with the prosthetic legs. Lastnight he could see through his glass eye. Tonight his legs had grown so much that his custom made artifical legs wouldnt stay on. AND the friends who came with him told him his eye looked like it was bulging out. He not only can he see but he feels like a new eye is growing.

I wonder what it must feel like to have all these changes in your body and realize that the hand of God is on you. You are helpless and awed. And things are happening in your body that are bringing about a complete change in your life. Angels are all around your ministering to your body and spirit. The very hand of God is upon your body and restoring it to what he originially intended it to be. Glory Glory Glory!!! To the living God. Thank you Jesus!

Todd Spoke about digging ditches in a dry valley and that they would be filled up even though there was a drought. Then the rains of God's glory would come. ( there is a verse in the Bible he read but Im really really tired, maybe I will look it up another time) Imagine in this dry thirsty world all filled with death and hopless ness God is seeking out people who are hungry for his heart to pour out his love, healing Glory etc too. And the way you keep it for your self is to give it away.. because you cant outgive God. he just keeps filling you up and overflowing you. wow! Thankyou Jesus!
